Update from Dan Egan
December 22, 2020
Welcome to Winter!
Well, the first big storm has crashed into the east coast dumping upwards of 40 inches. The Midwest has a blanket of white and storms are rolling through the Northwest. Here in Big Sky, the flurry machine is on while more and more terrain is opening. With winter now upon us, my focus turns to gliding over, on and through snow. The first run of the day is my morning glide, when I just feel the snow under my skis and get in tune with the day.
I hope you all have a great Holiday Season and enjoy the peace and stillness of a winter’s day. As we wrap up 2020 and drop off the cornice into 2021, I for one am excited for new beginnings.
And if you can make it, come ski with me in Big Sky this winter!

Catch the new episode of designed by tradition
Legendary Extreme Sports Athlete JT Holmes joins Dan for an exciting episode. As a pro athlete and adventure guide specializing in the human flight movement, JT Holmes has been at the forefront of skiing and alpine sport for decades. He’s no stranger to the limelight having starred in Warren Miller films since 1995, the Emmy-nominated film The Birdmen, Transformers 3, The Amazing Spiderman 2, Godzilla, Hangover 3, and countless commercials for brands like Coors Light, Ford, and Porsche. The Squaw Valley resident clearly has a face for the big screen and is also an accomplished writer publishing works in Sports Illustrated, Outside Magazine, and National Geographic.
On this episode of Designed By Tradition, Holmes sat down to chat with another Warren Miller alum, Chief Tradition Officer of Alps & Meters, Dan Egan to discuss his extreme sports career, friendships he’s made through skiing, and the 60 Minutes piece on the BASE jump in the Swiss Alps.
Thirty years in a white haze- what people are saying
The target date for the release of Thirty Years in a White Haze, is February 15, 2021. Preorders are available online now!
Here is what people are saying about Dan Egan and Eric Wilbur’s new book:
“Surprisingly emotional... Not since Warren Miller himself has an adventurer scaled so many heights, plummeted to so many depths, and lived to tell about it as grippingly and artfully as Dan Egan and Eric Wilbur do in WHITE HAZE."
-Patrick Creadon, Award-winning filmmaker and director of SKI BUM: The Warren Miller Story
“As I approached the summit of Mt Elbrus with my husband in June 2005, we were in a raging storm just below the summit and Rob spoke with graveness about the situation Dan Egan had endured in 1990 on this same mountain. Now, in Thirty Years in a White Haze, the world has the firsthand account of Dan’s struggle to survive in a small snow cave he dug by hand, solo, on the highest peak in Europe. Like Dan, I have traveled to ski in remote places around the world. I agree with his sentiment that while skiing nearly killed him, it also saved him.”
-Kit Deslauriers, first person to ski the Seven Summits, two-time World Freeskiing Champion, member of US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame
“Rarely, if ever, has the ski bum life been told as authentically and honestly as in White Haze. Written with remarkable candor and introspection, the book is a chronicle of his nearly primal pursuit of skiing. From the tension of sibling rivalry to the realities of an athlete getting older, Dan Egan and Eric Wilbur have penned a fearless personal and cultural history of one of the most dynamic eras in skiing. Not only is it a must-read for fans of the sport, especially those whose jackets are patched with duct tape, it’s a page-turning confessional of a career spent on multiple edges.”
-Steve Casimiro, Former editor of Powder Magazine and founder of Adventure Journal
